Can you get a loan for car repairs?
Updated November 7, 2026
Yes, you can ask for a personal loan for car repairs, and many lenders do not need the repair to be the stated reason. USAAllIn is not a lender: our form sends your request for $100 to $5,000 to lenders in our network, and each lender decides. Approval is never certain, so get the estimate first.
What should I do before asking for a loan for car repairs?
Get the number in writing. A repair estimate tells you what the job costs, what is parts and what is labor, and what the shop thinks must happen today. That one sheet of paper does more for your budget than anything else on this page.
- Ask what is urgent. Brakes and steering are safety work. A worn trim piece or a noisy heat shield may be able to wait a month.
- Ask for a second price if the car can be moved safely. A different shop may read the same problem differently.
- Ask about used or rebuilt parts. On an older truck this can change the total more than any loan rate will.
- Ask the shop about a payment plan. Some shops will split a bill or hold the car for a few days. Getting that in writing is often the cheapest option you have.
How fast can a loan for car repairs arrive?
If a lender approves you and you accept, funds could arrive as soon as the next business day. Timing is up to each lender and your bank, and weekends and holidays can stretch it. If the shop needs an answer sooner, tell them when you expect to know and ask what they can hold in the meantime.
How much should I ask for?
Ask for the smallest amount that gets the vehicle safely running, not the top of the estimate plus a cushion. Every extra dollar costs money to borrow. A simple way to set the figure:
| Step | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Must do now | The safety and running repairs from the estimate |
| Can wait | Anything the shop says can hold for 30 days or more |
| Cash you have | What you can pay today without missing rent or food |
| Amount to request | Must do now, minus the cash you have |
What will a repair loan cost me?
The cost is set by the lender, not by us, and it can vary widely. Lenders must tell you the cost of the loan in writing before you sign, according to the Federal Trade Commission (read November 7, 2026). Use that written figure, the APR, to compare offers. Read the total you will repay too, because a short loan with a small looking fee can carry a very high APR. The FTC gives an example of a two week payday loan with a $15 fee per $100, which works out to an APR of 391 percent.

Should I use my car title to pay for the repair?
Think hard before you do. A title loan uses the vehicle itself as collateral. The FTC says that once a lender repossesses your vehicle, it can sell it. Losing the truck you just paid to fix would make the original problem much worse. We compare the two in title loan or personal loan.
What can I try before I borrow?
The FTC suggests asking your creditors for more time and trying to get a loan from a credit union. A few more ideas that often work for car trouble:
- Ask family or an employer about a short advance, with the terms written down.
- Check your insurance. Towing, glass and some breakdown costs can be covered, depending on your policy.
- Check for recalls on your vehicle at nhtsa.gov. A recall repair is done free by a dealer.
- Look at whether another bill can move. Calling early usually gets a better answer than calling late.
Frequently asked questions
Should I borrow the whole repair estimate?
Borrow the smallest amount that gets the car safely running. Ask the shop which repairs must happen now and which can wait, then request that smaller figure.
Can I use my car title to pay for repairs?
A title loan uses the car as collateral, so a lender can repossess and sell it if you do not repay. That is a heavy risk when you need the car to get to work.
Does my state matter?
Yes. Rules and availability differ from state to state, and this service is not open everywhere. See which states allow personal loans online.
